Treating the Refractory Patient: Adding Expertise to Evidence-Based Methods
In the past year, the media has been busy documenting the risks of psychopharmacological treatments for children and adolescence, such as diversion of stimulant medications, overuse of second generation antipsychotics in foster children, abuse of prescription medications, and metabolic syndrome developing in preschoolers treated with psychiatric medications. At the same time, questions have arisen about the practice of continuation psychopharmacological treatments in non-responsive children and adolescents who have been refractory to all types of interventions by child and adolescent psychiatrists. This Institute will review and update participants about the possible medical and non-medical factors that lead to lack of treatment response and methods to detect and manage such factors.
